Reading Faces: A Suite Of Portraiture

It’s often the case that we read each other by means of our faces. Perhaps that’s why images depicting the human face are so compelling: they speak to us on a level beyond words, before words. In this gallery of portraiture, our three featured artists explore different aspects of this timeless subject. We invite you to enjoy these pieces by Elijah Ervin, Brooke Coughenour, Olivia Sizemore, presented in that order.

ELIJAH ERVIN is a Junior at the University of Louisville. He is currently in the Graphic Design Program of The Hite Art Institute. In addition to graphic design, his practice extends to painting, drawing, and fiber arts.

BROOKE COUGHENOUR is a junior at duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, studying within the Visual Arts magnet. Her artwork has previously been honored in the 2016 Tales of Poe: Student Art Display at the Frazier Museum in Louisville, as well as the Scholastics Art Awards.

OLIVIA SIZEMORE is a Berea College graduate from Leslie County, Kentucky, who is currently living in Morgantown, WV. While formally trained as a painter, she works in a variety of 2-D mediums, including ink and digital. She is currently self-publishing a webcomic, as she believes comics are good means to tell her version of what it means to be an Appalachian.
